Today, you can instantly pick out a Ford Mustang when you see one on the road, and part of the reason for that is that the car has been successful for so long. Here’s a little bit of a look back on how the Mustang started before becoming the mobile icon that it is today.
When Ford first put out the Mustang in 1964, it was part of a larger new trend in sports cars called “pony cars.” Out of all the pony cars on the market, the Mustang was one of the biggest instant hits, though. It originally was offered as both a hatchback and convertible, and also had a few performance models made as well.
The second-generation Mustang came around in 1974, and showed some marked changes from its original incarnation. In the face of added pressure from Japanese competitors, the new Mustang was smaller and introduced a 2.3-liter I-4 as a base engine along with the six- and eight-cylinder engine options. They also added a more upscale model to help improve the potential set of options.
Today, the sixth-generation Mustang combines a retro-style that’s appealing to purists, while still implementing new features both under the hood and in the cabin to keep modern. Chances are we’re going to be seeing plenty more Mustangs in the future.
