2010

2013

2013 ushered in the next-generation Fusion based on Ford’s CD4 mid-size platform. SEL trim models were replaced by the new Titanium designation.

Fusion Hybrid remained as a current model, as it does today, but there was a “new kid in town” as Ford introduced the Fusion Energi Hybrid plug-in model, with both hybrid models available in all trim levels. When Ford first put out the Mustang in 1964, it was part of a larger new trend in sports cars called “pony cars.” Out of all the pony cars on the market, the Mustang was one of the biggest instant hits, though. It originally was offered as both a hatchback and convertible, and also had a few performance models made as well.

The second-generation Mustang came around in 1974, and showed some marked changes from its original incarnation. In the face of added pressure from Japanese competitors, the new Mustang was smaller and introduced a 2.3-liter I-4 as a base engine along with the six- and eight-cylinder engine options. They also added a more upscale model to help improve the potential set of options.

Today, the sixth-generation Mustang combines a retro-style that’s appealing to purists, while still implementing new features both under the hood and in the cabin to keep modern. Chances are we’re going to be seeing plenty more Mustangs in the future.

For a while now, if you took a look at the main NASCAR entries that Ford brought to the table, you would probably see something that resembled the Fusion in style. However, next season, it’s planning on mixing things up, running a car that derives from the Mustang similar to its Xfinity offerings. So, what are people saying about the new racecar entry?

“We look forward to seeing the Ford Mustang, a cultural icon, on the track in the most competitive series in all of motorsports,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR’s head of racing development, in a formal press release. “Our sport eagerly anticipates the performance, style, and fanfare the Mustang will bring to the track each weekend beginning at the 2019 Daytona 500.” The slick style is no accident either, with Ford specifically saying it wanted to avoid having a car that looked like a basic race car with added Mustang stickers.

Over 50 years of work and improvement came to a head recently for Ford, when its 10 millionth Mustang rolled off the assembly line. Knowing well in advance which car was going to get this designation, Ford chose to pay a tribute to the first production Mustang, a white convertible with a V-8 engine and manual transmission.

Naturally, the company celebrated the recent milestone at its Dearborn, Michigan headquarters, and Flat Rock assembly plant. This included a parade of Mustang from every generation that made the drive from Dearborn to Flat Rock, and even a flyover from three P-51 Mustang fighter planes.

Ford adds that this long history also marks a long period of success for the company, being the world’s best-selling sports car for a number of years, as well as the top-selling sports car in the country over the last 50 years. One can only wonder what type of changes and innovations the original pony car will bring in the future.

“Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favorite around the world,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s head of global markets, in a release. “I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London, or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car—a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager.
