Ford continues to engineer enhancements into Fusion models that reveal commitment to Ford owners’ satisfaction with continued focus on quality, reliability, and performance.
History of Ford Fusion
From not-so-humble beginnings with the 2006 Fusion, Ford introduced a winner that was immediately praised by Car and Driver magazine as one of the top-selling mid-size automobiles. Ford had a winner for family transportation with a roomy interior, high-quality, and affordable transportation that is still fun to drive.
2006
Fusion’s introduction included three models: S, SE, and SEL touted as the “New Face of Ford.” Fusion was the first sedan to carry the new 3-bar grille. Engine offerings included the standard 2.3L I-4 Duratec 160hp power plant mated to a manual or 5-speed automatic transmission, with a 3.0L V6 version producing 221hp available on SE and SEL models, paired with a 6-speed automatic.
2007-2008
Drivers had all-wheel drive available with V6 engine models in 2007, along with technology that included optional Sirius satellite radio. Interior upgrades included front seat airbags and side curtains, and a DVD-based navigation system.
Technology came to the forefront in 2008 as well, with multiple features introduced:
- Voice-activated navigation system
- Standard ABS braking
- Rear parking assist
- SYNC communications and multimedia system
2010
Motor Trend magazine named Fusion its Car of the Year in 2010, extending the automobile’s recognition as Ford gave the Fusion a major facelift. This included new front and rear appearance, interior make-over, and new powertrain options.
Models now included: S, SE, SEL, Sport, and the newly available Hybrid. Fusion Hybrid models provided a standard 2.0L I-4 Atkinson engine, combined with advanced technology in its electronically controlled transmission and a powerful electric motor.
2013
2013 ushered in the next-generation Fusion based on Ford’s CD4 mid-size platform. SEL trim models were replaced by the new Titanium designation.
Fusion Hybrid remained as a current model, as it does today, but there was a “new kid in town” as Ford introduced the Fusion Energi Hybrid plug-in model, with both hybrid models available in all trim levels. Drivers now had available the choice of high levels of luxury while also reducing carbon emissions. In fact, the Fusion line-up was awarded the 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
2013 was a banner year for Fusion for other reasons, as well. New technology and safety features were all introduced as either standard equipment or options, depending on model/trim selection:
- Driver assistance functions integrating technology such as radar and sensors
- Lane Keeping System
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Forward Collision Warning
- Active Park Assist with backup camera
- Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
- Auto Start-Stop for fuel economy
- Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
Fusion Sport – in a Class by Itself
Ford did not forget automotive enthusiasts in the Fusion line-up. Along the way, Fusion Sport has provided updates that make this a true driver’s delight to drive. Performance and technology combine to make this much more than a typical family sedan, although it certainly serves that purpose as well.
Fusion Sport adds all the bells and whistles that a genuine aficionado will appreciate:
- All-Wheel Drive for stability and traction
- Power provided by an incredible 2.7L turbocharged EcoBoost V6 generating 325hp
- Computer-controlled dampers to even the ride
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel
- Leather-trimmed seating with Miko inserts
- Aluminum sport pedals
- Exterior enhancements that include a gloss-black mesh grille and quad-tip exhaust
Sport models just stand out from the competition, as all Fusion models do in their class.
