Ford Escape: The Beginning
Since its 2000 introduction to the masses as a 2001 model, Ford’s entry into the crossover market has been hailed as a feature-packed, roomy entry in the now densely-populated compact crossover SUV segment. Reviewers have highlighted the 200HP V-6 power plant and consumers responded favorably as Ford introduced the hybrid engine in response to increasing gas prices.
Ford’s well-recognized and unchallenged expertise in SUV and truck design and construction has no-doubt contributed to the continuing success of the Escape throughout model changes, technology enhancements, and revitalized styling, inside and out.
Evolution of the Ford Escape
Escape has undergone many significant upgrades in powertrains, appearance, and technology. Since opening their doors in 1983 to serve prospective Ford buyers and owners, Miami Metro Ford has witnessed each and every tweak or major update to the Escape lineup.
Some of the more significant upgrades include:
2000 – the new Ford Escape compact SUV hits the American market, along with a European version named the Maverick. Power was provided by optional engines that include peppy 2.0 or 2.3L L4 versions, generating 126hp and 154hp, respectively. Buyers could opt for the 3.0L V6 with the impressive performance of 203hp.
2004 – Ford responds to consumer desire for fuel-efficient transportation in providing a hybrid engine, the 2.3L 133hp L4. Escape was the first SUV to offer a hybrid solution for its drive train.
2005 – Ford introduces a luxury version of the Escape, presented under Mercury badging, named the Mercury Mariner.
2007-2008 – Ford unveils the next-generation of the Escape, presenting the made-over model for 2008 at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. Upgrades included a totally redesigned interior, while the exterior was also updated with new rear styling, redesigned wheel openings, and even a new grille. New, softer fabric interiors made from recycled materials were also incorporated into the new model. Safety improvements included side curtain airbags as standard equipment, and Ford added electronic stability control. Power options included the 2.3L 155hp L4, a 3.0L 203hp V6, or the hybrid 2.3L L4 at 135hp.
2008-2011 – Economic conditions and consumer demand drove some significant changes for the Ford Escape. Performance and mechanical changes were incorporated into the new models to improve both handling and fuel efficiency. Transmission changes included replacement of the prior 4-speed automatic transmission with a new 6-speed version, improving ratios for better mileage. The 2.3L gasoline engine was also updated to a 2.5L version, and a retuned suspension, updated exhaust system, and improved engine efficiency all contributed to a less gasoline-thirsty Escape.
2012-2016 – Ford continues to release new features and technology upgrades to the Escape, calling it the “Smarter Utility Vehicle.” Technology enhancements, improvements in fuel economy, and pure versatility targeted prospective compact SUV owners with modern designs and trim options that simply made the Escape more fun to own and drive.
2013 – a redesigned Escape makes its debut, based on the Ford Kuga, which was popular in European markets.
2017 – new models present a milestone in Escape evolution, with upgrades inside, outside, and under the hood:
- New exterior lighting.
- Sculpted hood and stylish new grille for an athletic and modern appearance.
- Incredible new EcoBoost engines, including the 1.5L EcoBoost turbocharged engine that cranks out a respectable 179hp with none of the lag of some turbo engines, and the remarkable 2.0L Twin Scroll EcoBoost that will impress any driver with its 245hp output.
- FordPass smartphone app to communicate with the vehicle, even helping locate the Escape when necessary.
- Advanced technology in driver assist functions such as lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.
- SYNC3 improvements that keep you connected reliably and efficiently.
- Enhanced Active Park System – helps you get into (or out of) tight parking spots.
Just scanning through the many developments and enhancements Ford has made to the Escape since the first generation in model year 2001, there can be no question that Ford’s commitment to increasing the performance, comfort, and overall ownership experience will continue to evolve.
Escape is Ford’s second most top-selling vehicle, behind only the rock-solid sales history of the F-150 pickup. There is a burgeoning popularity of the compact crossover SUV segment, and Escape provides an excellent mix of models and features for consumers. Ford’s dedication to providing comfort, performance, and attractive styling ensures that prospective buyers are investing in a vehicle that will provide safety and reliability for the long term.
